Why is Mobility So Hot?

According to Gartner, one of the leading information technology research and advisory companies, mobile devices are becoming the focal point of our personal and professional lives, and mobility affects legal, HR, policy, security, support, identity, business infrastructure and application decisions.

Gartner states “Healthy growth in smartphone and media tablet shipments over the next five years will enable a much higher level of IT consumerization than is currently possible. Since 1995, Gartner has used Hype Cycles to characterize the over-enthusiasm, or “hype” and subsequent disappointment that typically happens with the introduction of new technologies. However; Hype Cycles also show how and when technologies move beyond the hype, offer practical benefits and become widely accepted.

In Gartner’s Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, 2012, the BYOD; or bring your own device movement, is identified at the Peak of Inflated Expectations phase of the Hype Cycle, having surpassed the Innovation Trigger phase; the event that generates significant press and interest, building through the Positive Hype to reach its peak.

According to Gartner’s Hype Cycle, the next phase that BYOD will experience is the negative hype and Trough of Disillusionment, where technology fails to live up to expectations, before attaining the Slope of Enlightenment. This is where experimentation and the hard work of diverse organizations leads to a true understanding of the technology’s applicability, risks and benefits.

Finally it will reach the Plateau of Productivity, where the benefits of the technology become widely demonstrated and accepted. BYOD’s position on Gartner’s Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, 2012 forecasts a two to five year timeline to reach mainstream adoption. .

In 2012 based on their research, polling and surveys, Gartner made the following statement regarding BYOD:

“The rise of ‘bring your own device’ programs is the single most radical shift in the economics of client computing for business since PCs invaded the workplace”.

In its 2012 report “Bring Your Own Device: New Opportunities, New Challenges”, Gartner states “BYOD impacts corporate risk, infrastructure and software costs, customer service levels, and total cost of ownership. It typically requires significant technology protections (including authentication, network access control, mobile device management and mobile application management, encryption/containerization, and content protection) and delivery mechanisms (app stores, file-sharing systems and desktop virtualization). It often forces adoption of thinner-client architectures, multiplatform mobile application development environments and frameworks, and HTML5 for mobile applications.”
